Happy Birthday Avery - New Orleans Evacuee
I'd be thirsty too after the week this little man has endured.
The day before Hurricane Katrina made landfall little Avery and his father Angelo(with him in above picture) hopped in the car and made the 2 and a half hour trip to Mobile with plans to head on north out of the path of the storm, back to Angelo's hometown of Lexington, NC.
Almost 6 hours after crossing the Ponchotrain exiting The Big Easy to the East, the guys arrived in Mobile, where Angelo ammended his plan and decided instead to ride out the storm in a motel in Mobile.
After the storm passed and a second overnight in Mobile, Angelo and Avery snaked their way out of Alabama and drove the rest of the way to North Carolina to waiting family members who were worried to death.
Angelo figures his house in the East Bank section of New Orleans is under water and the plans he had to take Avery to Chucky Cheese with all his other little 3 year old playmates were a bust.
Angelo sought refuge in the Red Cross. He was looking for basic supplies and a bit of money to get him through, but the Red Cross came through even bigger when they heard of little Avery's impending 3rd birthday.
A local daycare had offered up any assisstance, so the Red Cross set up the party there with all of the other 3 year olds who could share Avery's big day with him. They decorated, bought cake and ice cream, and the staff and parents bought presents, LOTS of presents.
Avery is probably clueless to the woes of the world. As far as he is concerned this is just another trip to visit Great-Grandma. And he doesn't know yet, that even though his house and toys in New Orleans are washed away, he is one of the lucky ones.
Happy 3rd Birthday Avery!!! And Many More.
Side Note - Angelo is in the NAVY at NAS New Orleans and has to meet his group in Tennessee next week.
