The American Flag

I was appalled this week watching Hurricane Wilma coverage seeing that people left their American Flags on their staffs to be destroyed in the wind.

I didn't just see this on one network or in one location. I saw several different versions of tattered flags flapping in the wind. I don't understand why people can't have respect for the American Flag.

Here is a short excerpt of the US Flag code that deals with bad weather....

Title 4, Chapter 1: The Flag

Sec. 6. — Time and occasions for display

The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.

Sec. 8. — Respect for flag
The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

I don't care if people want to ruin their corporate flags or decorator flags but please people, take down your American Flags if a Hurricane is coming!

Those people should have taken those flags down, mine is up all day and brought in a night, but if I knew there was a hurricane or a tornado coming I would have taken mine down! Besides mine is a 20ft aluminum heavy duty flag pole only strong enough to survive winds up to 90 to 100 with the flag, and 190 to 200 without flag! Those are commercial flag poles, ment to take severe winds. Mine is a residential, anyway we never see much severe wind in Montana, place like Florida in hurricane season, yes, those poles are ment to take it no matter what kind of flag it is they won't be able to take those type of winds.

Well, I can understand the whole patriotic side of America, I'm American. But I think people have other things to worry about if there's a hurricane coming...and please don't be so judgmental of others just because they didn't take their flag down. It's just a flag, if the flag gets hurt, it doesn't mean it's the end of America...

When I was in the military they taught me to honor the flag and respect it and its traditions. It is not these peoples fault their flag is tattered, its the cheap fabric their flag is made of, which is disrespectful by itself. Polyester doesn't last in the weather. Flags are supposed to be made out of the same thing they used for the navys sailboats, its the best fabric for constant outdoor conditions, and the way it hangs is beautiful to me. Hemp is the fabric used by Betsy Ross for the first american flag for a reason. And so what if cannabis is the flower of the hemp plant, George Washington grew it and smoked it, he didn't think it was evil, and he's a man who opinion can be respected in my book. But what do I know I'm just a disabled vet that gets sad when he thinks about the fact that we gave up the right to have a traditional and weather resistant flag. And for what, so I can watch my children go to jail for smoking the same thing George Washington smoked while he was president. It makes me sad when I think about it.

Seriously? How about saving the lives of yourself and the people you love first. You can always get another flag...
